A Conversation about Video Meta Data

Posted on February 2, 2017April 8, 2018 by realworldnumbers

[10:42:56 PM] Me: scrub the video clip before uploading!

[10:43:40 PM] Chet Wanger: what do I use to clean a video clip? and what is online with my current videos in the metadata?

[10:44:14 PM] Me: good question.. so maybe the best way is to upload to an anymous youtube account

[10:44:42 PM] Me: google may know stuff, but when embedded, only what they present to the “person piqued and researching”…

[10:44:56 PM] Me: just one idea

[10:45:00 PM] Me: but I have no idea.

[10:45:52 PM] Chet Wanger: ok… the idea for scrubbing is just so nobody can compare my known video with the blog and get the same signature meta etc.

[10:46:23 PM] Me: ya, so youtube videos don’t let you know the “location of shoot” etc, for the average uer.

[10:46:44 PM] Me: sec.. googling “what .mp4 meta data”… etc.

[10:47:29 PM] Me: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/339119/how-to-strip-gps-location-data-from-an-mp4-video-file

[10:48:03 PM] Me: so GPS location is mostly a smartphone thing… or IS IT? I think some SLR cameras embed this stuff…

[10:48:09 PM] Me: so then, why not video recorders.

[10:48:20 PM] Me: this is a technical solution to removing .mp4 location information

[10:48:42 PM] Me: you may be able to run those commands on a Mac command line

[10:48:47 PM] Me: … maybe maybenot

[10:49:19 PM] Me: or why not this app for mac specific

[10:49:20 PM] Me: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/tag-stripper/id432262744?mt=12

[10:50:13 PM] Me: they strip multiple video format types

[10:50:52 PM] Me: your web site embeds a youtube video ?

[10:52:07 PM] Me: I see it is

[10:52:51 PM] Me: so you better strip location data off even before youtube upload

[10:53:27 PM] Me: cause google knows, even if they don’t “currently” display based on location or disclose some of the meta

[10:53:45 PM] Me: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7002331?hl=en

[10:53:54 PM] Me: best practices for meta data

[10:54:12 PM] Me: (don’t do it cause then we don’t know everything )

[10:56:17 PM] Chet Wanger: ok..

[10:56:19 PM] Me: you still there?

[10:56:21 PM] Me: k

[10:56:53 PM] Chet Wanger: going to have to pay attention to the meta. I always post through a proxy and my cameras don’t have gps, but iPhone does

[10:57:17 PM] Me: not necessarily GPS coordinates are the only gotchas

[10:57:23 PM] Me: I haven’t read mp4 spec

[10:57:39 PM] Me: could even have a creation-history with tells in it

[10:58:25 PM] Me: am I freaking you out a bit?

[10:58:44 PM] Me: i hope so .  most people wouldn’t give it a second thought.
